Hematite is used as a weighting material in drilling muds due to its high specific gravity (4.9 - 5.3), resulting in a lower amount required to achieve desired mud specific gravity. It provides the mud with a higher plastic viscosity, gel strength and yield point.
Ilmenite is used as a weighting material in drilling muds due to its high specific gravity (4.5 - 5). Bisley supplies an Ilmenite with a fine particle size preventing abrasion on equipment and minimizing solid segregation.
Manganese tetroxide is used as a weighting material in drilling muds due to its high specific gravity (4.8).
